The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has its system for regulating the manufacture of enclosures. The IEC IP ratings stand for ingress protection. These ratings define levels of sealing against the entry of foreign bodies in electrical enclosures. The first digit in an IP rating signifies intrusion protection while the second digit is for moisture protection.
The first number in an IP rating is for protection against intrusion ranges from 1 to 6. These ratings include protection against the entry of astronomical objects, dust particles, wires, insects, and the human hand. The 6th rating is the highest and denotes a tight and vacuum sealed enclosure.
The second number on IP ratings is for protection against the access of water and ranges from 1-9. That scope includes protection against condensation, water droplets from above, windblown water droplets, multidirectional water splashes, immersion, and high and low-pressure water jets. The highest rating, 9, signifies an enclosure that is sealed up against all forms of water ingress.

IP 6X, for instance, would mean that the enclosure has the highest protection against intrusion from solid objects but zero value for protection against water ingress.
